John and Annie Martell married when they were in their early 20s in the mid 60s after a brief courtship, Annie admitted herself that they did not really know each other. John was a member of the Mitchell trio at the time and toured constantly. After they married, money was very tight for a time which put a strain on the relationship. Then he found success but still Annie did not travel with him. They had 2 adopted children. John was tested and found to be 'sterile'. John admitted himself in his autobiography and on the associated CDs which he made to accompany the book, that he was unfaithful to Annie and this escalated after he hit the big time. He spent little time in Colorado where they had a home and they had numerous separations during the 70s....one of which inspired "Annie's Song". Annie and John divorced in the early 80s. In 1986 John met Cassandra Delaney who had appeared in various states of undress in the 1986 film 'fair game'...there was a 20 year age gap. John admitted in his autobiography of being warned about Cassie by her boyfriend whom she waved goodbye at the airport as she flew off to Aspen with John after knowing each other only a few days. During courtship John said that there were rumours that Cassandra had been unfaithful. Cassandra gave birth to a baby girl, Jesse Belle, in May 1989 - 9 months after marrying John. After the baby, John wanted to tour again but Cassandra wanted to stay with the child. Things turned sour and Cassandra complained of his moods and his drinking. John said that Cassandra was making a fool of him. They split in 1991 and divorced in 1993 - the divorce cost John dearly. John died in an aeroplane accident in 1997. What will happen in the coming years? There are no sure things. My own guess is that it will not be a member organization again. And I agree with that, personally. With John gone, much of the energy of the organization was gone. Having worked closely with Windstar for many years, as a Choices speaker, and a friend of JD, I confess to very mixed feelings. But I do believe that Windstar continues to exist in the most important ways. John once told me that if we (Windstar) were doing our jobs, people would be motivated to take action in their own communities and their own lives. That, I think, is the real legacy he wanted. “Annie’s Song ” is a strain transcribed and cursive by singer-songwriter Evangelist Denver. It was his ordinal sort one strain in the USA, occupying that spot for two weeks in July 1974. It also went to sort one in the UK, where it was Denver’s only major hit single (many of Denver’s American hits were more familiar in the UK through cover versions by another artists). “Annie’s Song ” was cursive as an ode to Denver’s then-wife, Annie Denver (ne Martell). Denver “wrote this strain in most ten-and-a-half minutes one period on a runner lift ” to the top of discoverer Mountain in Aspen, river as the physical exhilaration of having “just skied down a rattling difficult run ” and the feeling of total dousing in the beauty of the colors and sounds that filled all senses inspired him to think most his wife. The strain has since become a wedding standard and an expression of love for many people, due to its grand imagery and the. Askville - Page not found

And then few songs later, Annie Martell, Denver's first wife, took the stage near the end, after Denver beamed in from 1995 with a lovely rendition of "Annie's Song," taken from his Wildlife Conservation Society performance. Stripped of the backing instrumentation from that clip, here he was accompanied elegantly by the Boulder Philharmonic. Choking back tears, Martell talked about how beautiful her late ex-husband was and how touched she was by the whole gathering, as she related how Denver wrote the song in twenty minutes on a chair lift in Aspen.  time? In the 1970s, I was a college student who majored in journalism but who was also musically trained at a professional level. One of my unrealized ambitions - well, an obsession at the time - was to sing backup for John Denver. It never happened. Like many of my peers, I walked from class to class humming his songs, in particular Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High and Leavin' on a Jet Plane, recorded in 1969 by Peter, Paul and Mary. I never could figure out, back then, what was so special about his performances, but special they were. Great voice, yes. Little-boy look, sure. Decades later, I'm convinced that what was unusual about his stuff was that those of us who heard it remembered both the music and the lyrics. That's probably because he wrote so many of them himself. And the glasses. Was there anybody else on the face of the earth whose glasses - or lack of them in later years - got so much press? Early Years Denver was born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. on December 31, 1943 in Roswell, New Mexico, according to the Encyclopedia of World Biography. An Air Force brat, he lived in various communities as well as overseas. One of his happiest memories supposedly was growing up on his grandmother's farm in Oklahoma. It was there that he first encountered the guitar when she gave him an antique Gibson. John Denver dropped out of Texas Tech to move to Los Angeles in 1964. The following year, he replaced Chad Mitchell as a vocalist, guitarist and banjoist for the Chad Mitchell Trio, beating out 250 other wannabes. Many fans never realized how driven he was to write songs. As he moved through the 1970s with one hit after another, his popularity with both pop and country audiences grew. In 1974, he was named Poet Laureate of Colorado. The next year, he won the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year award. The 1980s Annie Martell_Search The World

He was the oldest of two boys born to father Henry John "Dutch" Deutshendorf Sr., and his mother, Erma. His dad was an Air Force test pilot who moved his family around the country before settling in Fort Worth, Texas. John's younger brother Ron was born in 1949. Denver grew up a shy child. After high school, he enrolled at Texas Tech to become an architect. In college, Denver began singing with a group called the Alpine Trio. He dropped out of Texas Tech after two years and moved to Los Angeles in 1963 to pursue his dreams of a singing career.

For three years (1965-68), the Trio withstood a rigorous touring schedule. John, who had been an army brat, born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. on New Year’s Eve 1943, lived the itinerant lonely life of most children who move around a lot. Music was a refuge from the time he was in his teens. In 1963 he made a lame attempt to go to Texas Tech, chiefly to please his father, but dropped out after a year, moving to Los Angeles to try his luck as a singer. He sang at Ledbetter’s, a club in Westwood Village, owned by Randy and Diane Sparks who also recognized a special charisma in this downhome, boyish lad. “The people just love him,” Diane told her husband. It was Randy Sparks who suggested the name change from Deutschendorf to Denver. John lived with them, made $5 a week and played music nights-until his audition for Milt Okun. He met Australian-born singer Cassandra Delaney at an Australian music award show in 1986. They fell in love and married in 1988. Their daughter Jesse Belle was born in 1989. Delaney was 18 years his junior and they separated in October 1991. Denver was an accomplished golfer and in 1976 his father taught him how to fly airplanes. Denver purchased vintage biplanes and two Cessna's. His passion was for his music and flying, the mountains and his home in Aspen. His enjoyment of flying repaired the differences that had plagued his relationship with his father. His dad had been disappointed in Denver's career choice in music instead of a military career. In 1995, at the age of 42, Denver shed his trademark steel-rimmed eye-glasses for contact lenses and adopted a more contemporary haircut. John Denver Tribute Concert and Colorado Hall of Fame induction at 1STBANK Center, 4/21/11 - Denver Music - Backbeat Denver met Annie Martell, a college student in St. Paul, Minnesota when the Mitchell Trio was performing a concert at her school. They married in 1965 and settled three years later in Aspen, Colorado. He loved her deeply, writing "Annie's Song" for his wife. They could not have kids so they adopted two interracial kids, Zachary, born in 1974 and Anna Kate, born in 1978. Denver was a philandering husband when he was touring on the road. It was his many infidelities that hurt his marriage with his wife as well as an explosive temper. He tried to strangle Annie and then took a chain saw to the dining room table and headboard of their bed in retaliation for her cutting down trees beside their Aspen home. Annie became a psychotherapist and in 1982 asked her husband for a divorce. John Denver's wife and children - Colorado (CO) - Page 2 - City-Data Forum

On 10/12/1997, after playing a round of golf with his friends near Carmel, California, Denver headed out to fly a new plane that he had just purchased. He was killed when the plane crashed at 5:30 PM in Pacific Grove, California. After investigation, the cause of the plane crash was released in January 1999. Investigators believe that Denver was low on fuel and, unfamiliar with the cockpit of his new plane, lost control. When he was looking for the fuel-tank switch he inadvertently put the plane into a roll and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. He left millions of fans mourning a beloved talent.
